That Darn Cat!

Standard

Spent the evening after work swimming at Oceans of Fun.  The wave-pool there has a 10-minute song cycle while the waves are running.

Why am I mentioning that with a title “That Darn Cat!”? Because after the park closed, we came home and started watching the classic Disney movie — which has a whole surfing subplot. The movie was made in the days when surfing was a thing. Which reminded me of the wave pool songs. I’ve never really heard the words of the songs. So here they are, looked up on the Internet:

Wipe Out!

Written by the Sufaris’ in 1963, is actually an instrumental piece. The only lyrics are: “Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, wipe out”.

Catch a Wave

Also released in 1963, this song was written for the Beach Boys.

Catch a wave and you’re sitting
On top of the world

Don’t be afraid to try the greatest sport around
Everybody tries it once
Those who don’t just have to put it down
You paddle out turn around and raise
And baby that’s all there is
To the coastline craze
You gotta catch a wave and you’re sittin’
On top of the world

Not just a fad cause it’s been going on so long
All the surfers going strong
They said it wouldn’t last too long
They’ll eat their words with a fork and spoon
And watch ’em they’ll hit the road
And all be surfin’ soon
And when they catch a wave they’ll be
Sittin’ on top of the world

Catch a wave and your sittin’ on top of the world

So take a lesson from a top-notch surfer boy
Get yourself a big board
But don’t you treat it like a toy
Just get away from the shady turf
And baby go catch some rays on the sunny surf
And when you catch a wave you’ll be sittin
On top of the world

Catch a wave and you’ll be sittin’
On top of the world
Catch a wave and you’ll be sittin’
On top of the world
Catch a wave and you’ll be sittin’
On top of the world

Surfin’ Safari

This song was on the debut studio album of the Beach Boys, from 1962

Let’s go surfin’ now
Everybody’s learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with)

Early in the morning we’ll be startin’ out
Some honeys will be coming along
We’re loading up our woody
With our boards inside
And headin’ out singing our song

Come on (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me
Come along (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me

Let’s go surfin’ now
Everybody’s learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with)

At huntington and malibu
They’re shooting the pier
At rincon they’re walking the nose
We’re going on safari to the islands this year
So if you’re coming get ready to go

Come on (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me
Come along (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me

Let’s go surfin’ now
Everybody’s learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with)

They’re anglin’ in laguna in Cerro Azul
They’re kicking out in dohini too
I tell you surfing’s mighty wild
It’s getting bigger every day
From Hawaii to the shores of Peru

Come on (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me
Come along (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari)
Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me

Let’s go surfin’ now
Everybody’s learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with)

With me
Surfin’ safari
With me
Surfin’ safari
With me
Surfin’ safari
With me
Surfin’ safari
